General Atomics brings in Spirit Defense to build FQ-42 fuselages

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems has partnered with Spirit Defense, a Boeing company, to design and build fuselages for the FQ-42 Vengeance, its Collaborative Combat Aircraft for the Air Force. GA-ASI has built its aircraft alone since its founding in 1992, and says a second manufacturer adds capacity and removes single points of failure. Production targets and delivery timelines were not disclosed.

Why it matters

CCA Increment 1 is moving from prototypes to production, and the question is no longer whether the aircraft fly but whether anyone can build them at the rate the Air Force wants. Bringing in a second fuselage builder is a bet that volume, not performance, will decide the program.
